Controlling Birds Control, How To Spot Them And Get Rid Of Them

Having a large number of birds in or around farm buildings, barns, poultry and livestock structures can be very worrisome. They may contaminate food and water of livestock, damage crops and cause unhygienic conditions through their droppings to the farm land. They may transfer diseases to the plants or live stocks or spread in-house infection from an infected livestock/plant to a healthy one. Birds’ droppings can also clog farming equipments if not properly cleaned. They can also cause decrease in productivity in farms through feeding on farm produce on farmlands as well as barns. Birds’ nests can also be very destructive if they block gutters and trains.

Here at Mega pest control, we are concerned with lessening your burden of bird control if you are experiencing one. We also strive to help you prevent one through our suggested control programs. However, it is important to have an insight into how these birds behave and identify the specific problems each type can cause. Understanding the habits of birds gives better ideas on the most effective control method. Not all birds in the sky are all out to destroy your assets. The species that are likely to cause troubles in and around poultry facilities, barns and farm buildings include:

  • House sparrows
  • House finches
  • Pigeons
  • European starlings

House Sparrows

They are specialists in feeding on grains and seeds of weeds. When they infest a barn or field, they can destroy a lot of grains and eat livestock feeds. They love to nest around buildings and barns especially within holes in the walls burrowed by them.

House finches

They are very versatile and can adapt well and nest in several settings.  They build their nests in hanging plants, openings in building walls, vines and conifers. They feed majorly on seeds. They are also commonly attracted to poultry and livestock farms.

Pigeons

These species of birds feed on feed on just about anything. They have a preference for grains and seeds, but can eat lot of garbage. They are very extensive feeders and can cause a whole lot of destruction to barns and fields. They also have the propensity to transfer diseases through contaminating food and water. Pigeons nest on beams, rafters and ledges.

European starlings

They are also known extensive feeders- from insects to garbage. They nest in cavities (pipes, holes in the walls, ceilings, drains and gutters) in and around buildings.

It is important to know that some of these birds are protected by law and incessant killings can attract huge penalties. We are thus willing to save you from fines by suggesting control measures.

Bird Control Methods

We at Mega pest control have put together the three Cs for controlling birds.

  1. Curb the attractions: birds are usually attracted to a site when they find abundance of food. In order to mitigate this factor, you should limit the amount of food and water made available. Spilled grains should also be cleaned and if possible use covered feeders. Grains and seeds should be stored in bird-proof containers as well. Then, water troughs that are deeper than bird’s reach should be used. You can also change the angle of roosting and nesting by inclining it in a way uncomfortable for birds to use.
  2. Completely keep birds off: it is most effective to avoid intrusion of birds into facilities. Although, this method could be rather expensive to establish, it is worth the expenses. The following barriers are helpful:
  • Seal the doorways by hanging heavy plastic strips. It allows human and machinery passage but not bird.
  • Brace all openings with metals, glass or wires. Electric or porcupine wires are generally more effective. They inflict pains on the birds thus preventing perching.
  • Netting of all cavities or openings in and around the farm or buildings is also an effective method.
  • Install electronic control devices that induce temporary electric shock on perching birds.
  • Chemical bird repellents can be sprayed or painted on walls, ledges or rafters. They give birds irritation on contact.
  1. Cut down reproduction: before taking this step, ensure the birds are not protected by law to avoid penalties. Pull down nests and destroy eggs. You can also use lethal chemicals or guns to kill disturbing birds. Trapping of the birds is also an effective method.

We understand that controlling birds may be a little difficult. We therefore suggest that you try a combination of techniques for more success. We hope you find this information very useful.
